You must have heard the story of Lord Hanuman bringing an entire hill to Lanka on which grew the 'sanjeevani' plant. It was instantly effective on Lakshman who lay unconscious. Before the birth of any civilization and advent of any organisation system of medication, the human beings must man also lived like any wild animal and must have observed the animals eating particular herbs and leaves. You must have seen many people selling indigenous cures in buses and railway trains. These domestic medicines have been handed down from one generation to another. it is common knowledge that many of these seemingly innocuous domestic medicines have proved more effective than what the modern therapies have to offer.

The reference is to Ram-Ravan battle in Ramayana. Lakshman had fallen down unconscious, hit by the arrow of Meghnad, the son of Ravana. Everyone, including Ram is distressed. ram wails aloud for his stricken brother. The renowned Ayurvedic physician, Sushena, is called. He examined thought of herbal treatment. Hanuman was entrusted the task of bringing sanjeevani herb from Himalayas . Hanuman was told that this particular plant glows during the night. When he reached the Himalayas, he found a lot of plants glowing in the night. He uprooted the entire hill and brought it to lanka. The juice of sanjeevani was administered to Lakshmana. He regained consciousness. Happiness pervaded the atmosphere at the glad tidings.

Sanjeevani plant acted as a medicine, but it had not been prepared by any vaidya. The plant was a gift of nature and was not man made. Ayurveda mentions a lot of such miraculous plants and herbs that can be effectively used as medicines. They are soma, mahasoma, chandrama, anshuma, manjuvan, rajatprabh, darwa, kaniyan, shwetan, kanakprabh, pratanvan, lalvratt, karvir, anshuvan, swayamprabh, garudraksh, gayatra, aishtam, pawat, jagat, shaakar, snishtam, raikta, tripadagayatri, sanjeevani, vishalyakarini, vranropini, and sanharohini.

Let us again go back to Ramayana. As Lakshmana regained consciousness, he was give vishalyakarini and the arrows embedded in his body came out automatically. His wounds dried up miraculously with the use of vranropini. The marks of the wounds on his body body disappeared as sanharohini was applied to them.

It is because of the properties that they possess, these herbs are used in all systems of therapies. It would be pertinent to mention a story regarding Jeevak, who was a renowned follower of Mahatma Buddha. This king among-st physicians, was born 600 years before Christ. He was an expert in the use of these medicinal herbs and plants. There are many details of his miraculous cures in the Buddhist literature. Jeevak was an orphan and was brought up by Abhay, prince of Magadh. Later on, he studied in Takshila University. He studied medicine in the university.

After seven years of education, his teacher handed him a spade and asked him to bring a plant that has no medicinal properties. Jeevak returned after a great lapse of time and told his teacher that he could not find any plant that can be used in treatment of some disease or other.

This story is of period, when perhaps Sushruta must have been writing his famous treatise 'Charak-samhita', Charak, who wrote 'charak-samhita',and is regarded as founded of modern Ayurveda, came into limelight some four hundred years later. We have already mentioned about the book 'Attreya-samhita', written by Attreya, But this book could not gain much  recognition and it is not be treated as a separate system of therapy.

Emperor Bimbsar of Magadh Suffered from fistula. The most renowned physicians of that time could not cure him. It was Jeevak, who cured him rapidly by use of some ointment made of medicinal herbs. This story reveals that what a great physician he was. Apart from this, Jeevak was also famous as a complete physician who knew a lot about surgery as well.

It was the renowned physician Acharya Vhabhatt, who in his book 'Ashtangsangraha', made Christ. Acharya Vagabhatt established the supremacy of Indian system of medicine not only in India, but in Tibet, China, Arabia and Iran and had detailed the medicinal properties of these harbs in his book. It was, perhaps, the first attempt to classify and popularise thier use in an organised manner for eradication of diseases.

the medicinal properties of plants and herbs are detailed now a days in the study of botany. But, this is also true that use of plants, fruits and vegetables has not made much head-ways as a system of treatment. Many companies are preparing and marketing medicines made out of these things, but they have been incorporated as a part of Allopathic treatment.

Causes of Diseases

The entire construction of human body points towards the fact that he has to be vegetarian. The stomach and digestive organs of our body are not meant for meat and other hard to digest food. That is the reason why this system is thrown out of gear because of modern food habits. It is due to the imbalances of stomach and intestines that there are disorders in blood which aggravates the ailments of the human body.

Treatment

In this therapy. The treatment is based on the symptoms of the disease. A different treatment is prescribed according to the need of the situation.
